Atbalmin tribe

The Atbalmin tribe is an ethnic group that inhabits the border area between Telefomin district and the Pegunungan Bintang, in West Sepik and the Papua Highlands Province. The area inhabited by this tribe is included in the Okmekmin traditional territory. This tribe also has something unique, namely a typical greeting called Yapkup/Yepmum.

In general, based on references from books and journals, it is recorded that the Telefomin area is inhabited by six tribes, namely the Atbalmin, Miyanmin, Tifolmin, Trefolmin, Oksapmin, and Urapmin, plus seven tribes in the Pegunungan Bintang, namely the Ngalum, Lepki, Ketengban, Murop, Kimki, Arintap, and Yetfa. Of the six native tribes in Telefomin, the Atbalmin tribe has an original population of less than 6,000,00 (three thousand) people.

Etymology

The indigenous people of the Atbalmin and Ngalumin tribes are people whose majority live on the banks of rivers and on hills. The rivers they live in are called the Oksamol, Okningim, Okhal, and Kali Sepik which means "river that flows far to the north." This river flows from the Okyip region (Ngalum tribe) until it empties into the Sepik river. Because they live close to the river, the Nekalimin people call themselves "Atbalmin people". Meanwhile, the name Abalmin itself comes from the local language of the local people, which means "already in the heart" where local people feel safe, comfortable, peaceful, joyful and prosperous with the presence of a flowing water source that gives them life.

Language

According to local legend, the Atbalmin tribe was given language by "Numi Tinum dukum" or the Almighty Creator. Numi Tinum dukum gave the Kali language to the Atbalmin tribe and Kali language is commonly used by local people to communicate. However, in the daily activities of the Atbalmin tribe, the Rani language is not used fully because people who live close to other tribes often use two languages. For example, like the Atbalmin people who live close to the Kiwirok people, they often use two languages, namely Kali and Nek.

In the pronunciation of the Kali language, there are two dialects/accents which are divided between two regions, namely the region consisting of Bisulam, Munbil, Nioldal, Tumolbil, and East Kiwirok and the region consisting of Kiwirok Besar, Okyob, Tinibil, Oklip, Kiwirok Kota, Kiwi, and okhika. The dialect from the first region predominantly uses the letters [K]&[H], while the second region predominantly uses the letters [Y] & [L].

Geographic distribution

Quoting directly from Dr. Micheal Weach the cultural anthropologist and media ecologist at Kansas State University. The Atbalmin tribe written by Dr. Micheal Wesch in (2016), explained that the existence of this tribe is right in the western part of Telefomin Regency and the eastern part of the Bintang Mountains, West Papua Province. If you look at the authority map of the tribes in Telefomin Regency and the Pegunungan Bintang, the Atbalmin tribe is located on the border with several other tribes. For example, in the eastern region the Atbalmin tribe borders on the Miyanmin and Tifalmin tribes, in the western region it borders on the Trefolmin and Urapmin, in the southern region it borders on the Oksapmin tribe and one of the Ela Tari tribes, namely Kopiako, in the northern region it borders on the Favolmin tribe and to the west, namely the Ngalum has a direct border with West Papua Province. Based on data from BPS (Central Statistics Agency) of Telefomin Regency, the area of the Atbalmin (Yapsie-green river) tribal authority is 4,523 km² or equivalent to 10.60% of the area of Telefomin and the Bintang Mountains. The distance between the Atbalmin tribal authority area to Telefomin, the capital of Telefomin district is from Yapsie 231 km and from Tumolbil 235 km (Dr. Micheal Wesch).
