Subtitle: The Inspiring Journey of Health Service, Resilience, and Hope. The Story of Dakipki Witie Wengkok

In the higher rugged mountains of Village in Tumolbil, Nekalmin LLG, Telefomin District, in Papua New Guinea’, a young boy once walked long distances to attend the small community school with dreams far bigger than his surroundings. The paths were not easy. The terrain was steep, the resources were limited, and the future was uncertain. But within that young boy burned a quiet determination, a calling that would one day transform countless lives.  That boy, Dakipki Witie Wengok, would grow into one of Papua New Guinea’s most dedicated nursing and mental health professionals, proving that humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary impact.

His story is not just about academic achievement or professional titles. It is a story of perseverance, purpose, and lifelong learning.

Mr. Dakipki Witie Wengok.

A Dream Rooted in Humble Beginnings

Mr. Wengok began his educational journey at Tumolbil Community School, completing Grade 6 in 1987. Education in such a remote setting required resilience. Each year forward was not just academic progress; it was a victory over circumstance.  Like Dr. Ben Carson, who often speaks about how education became the turning point in his life, Mr. Wengok understood early that knowledge is the doorway to transformation.

From 1988 to 1991, he attended Telefomin High School, completing Grade 10. It was during these formative years that his passion for healthcare began to take shape. He understood early that his people needed more than hope; they needed healing.

In 1994, he earned a Certificate in Community Health Nursing from Sopas Adventist School of Nursing in Wabag. This was not merely a qualification; it was the beginning of a lifelong mission to serve.

A Career Defined by Service

Unlike many who pursue titles first, Mr. Wengok pursued service.

His professional journey began with voluntary service at Tumolbil Adventist Health Centre (1996–2005). There, he worked across maternity, maternal and child health, school health, outpatient care, public health programs, and reporting. In remote communities where healthcare resources are limited, his work meant life, hope, and survival for many families.

Returning fully to health service, he served:

  • He served mothers bringing new life into the world.
  • He treated children battling preventable diseases.
  • He walked with families during their most vulnerable moments.
  • In remote Papua New Guinea, healthcare is not just clinical; it is deeply human. And Mr. Wengok embodied that humanity.

His path was not linear. Between 2006 and 2008, he stepped into roles as a Fifield geotechnical engineer and later managed a farm in Tabubil. These experiences reflect adaptability, another trait Dr. Carson often highlights: the ability to grow through diverse experiences rather than be limited by them.

But his heart always returned to healthcare.

From 2008 to 2009, he served at Manari Community Health Post in Mt. Koiari under the Central Papua Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Health Services. Soon after, he became Second Officer-in-Charge at Tokarara Adventist Health Centre in Port Moresby (2010–2012). Leadership found him naturally because he led through service, not authority.

The Pursuit of Higher Knowledge

Many professionals stop after gaining stable employment. Mr. Wengok did the opposite. Between 2012 and 2015, he completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Pacific Adventist University, proving that learning never expires with age or experience.

But his greatest calling was yet to emerge: mental health.

In a nation where mental health remains under-recognized and under-resourced, Mr. Wengok chose to specialize in the field that many overlook. From 2024 to 2025, he completed a master’s degree in mental health from Atlantic International University, Florida, USA.

And his academic climb continues:

  • 2026: Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Nursing (Mental Health), University of Papua New Guinea
  • 2027: Planned Doctoral Studies at Warden University, United Kingdom

From a remote mountain village to international academic institutions his journey redefines possibility.

A Heart for Mental Health and Healing

Choosing to specialize in mental health reflects deep courage and vision. In many communities, mental health remains misunderstood or stigmatized. By advancing his education in this field, Mr. Wengok stands at the forefront of a critical movement in Papua New Guinea, bringing dignity, understanding, and professional care to those who suffer silently.

Dr. Ben Carson once said that true leadership involves lifting others and giving them the tools to succeed. Through mentorship, teamwork, and clinical excellence, Mr. Wengok has done exactly that.

A Leader on the Hospital Frontlines

From 2016 to 2025, Mr. Wengok served at Port Moresby General Hospital, Papua New Guinea’s largest referral hospital. Here, his expertise expanded across:

HIV and Tuberculosis care

Palliative and end-of-life care

Oncology and cancer treatment

Mental health services

Lifestyle and respiratory diseases

General medical wards

He was not just a nurse; he was a team leader, mentor, and advocate for holistic care. His approach blended clinical precision with emotional intelligence, especially in mental health and palliative care, where compassion matters as much as competence.

Lessons from His Journey

His life teaches powerful lessons:

1. Where you begin does not determine where you finish.

2. Education is a lifelong commitment, not a one-time achievement.

3. Leadership grows from service, not position.

4. Faith and perseverance can transform rural beginnings into global academic pursuits.

From Tumolbil Village to international graduate studies, his journey echoes Dr. Carson’s belief that discipline, faith, and determination can rewrite any story.

A Legacy Beyond Titles

Nearly three decades into his career, Mr. Wengok’s story is not defined by certificates on a wall. It is defined by:

Mothers who survived childbirth

Patients who found hope during cancer treatment

Individuals battling mental illness who were treated with dignity

Young nurses who learned leadership through his example

Unlike many inspiring stories that conclude with retirement, Mr. Wengok’s journey is still unfolding. With planned doctoral studies ahead, he is not slowing down—he is accelerating toward greater contribution.

His life stands as a powerful message to young people in Papua New Guinea and beyond:

  • You do not need perfect conditions to achieve greatness.
  • You need vision, resilience, and a heart committed to serving others.
  • Dakipki Witie Wengok is more than a nurse, more than a mental health professional.

He is a living example that purpose-driven education can heal not just patients but also communities, provinces, and nations.

An Inspiration for Papua New Guinea and Beyond

Dakipki Witie Wengok’s journey is more than personal success; it is a message to every young person in rural Papua New Guinea:

Your background does not limit your future.

Your village is not your boundary.

Your service can change a nation.

From Tumolbil Village to global academic halls, from community clinics to national hospitals, Mr. Wengok’s life stands as a testament to perseverance, leadership, and the transformative power of healthcare.
